Pre-Basel 2015: Introducing the Breguet Tradition Automatique Seconde Rétrograde 7097

Since the unveiling of their reference 7027 in 2005, Breguet has continuously manufactured a collection of timepieces, the Tradition collection, featuring relatively uncommon, exhibition dials. In other words, the inner works of these watches can be viewed via the dial, versus the typical case back display of only some of a watch's internal componentsThis clever design, which primarily allows the usually hidden segments of a movement to be clearly portrayed atop the baseplate, is inspired by the early one-hand "subscription" watches created by Abraham-Louis Breguet. "Subscription" watches required a mere 25-percent payment upfront and the rest, following delivery. Quite often the "Subscription" watches would have simple movements and, to improve the basic aesthetic of these watches' exteriors, this method of reversing the baseplate's components was applied. The newest addition to this collection is Breguet's exceptional Automatique Seconde Rétrograde 7097.

If I had to select one contemporary, non-complicated Breguet that I truthfully hold in the highest regard, my choice would be the Automatique Seconde Rétrograde. Aside from embracing early designs, this masterpiece has a very sophisticated, avant-garde appearance. Classic, blue Breguet steel hands rest on the guilloché dial at twelve o'clock.  Situated slightly to the left, at the 10 o'clock position, is the watch's retrograde small seconds.

The case is bold, constructed of 18-karat white gold, and crafted carefully and accurately to ensure perfection. A detail often found on traditional Breguet watches, the baseband is relatively thick in height and fluted all around.

As with all of Breguet's timepieces, the movement is is quite spectacular. This watch is powered by a Caliber 505SR1, 141⁄2 lignes. 38 jewels self-winding movement which includes a 50-hour power reserve.

If white gold isn't your style, though I do favor white gold, Breguet also offers an alternative Tradition Automatique Seconde Rétrograde cased in 18-karat rose gold.
